received a slap on the hand by the Environmental Protec tion Agency and the State Board of Health Gas City like all other communities is required to send city water sam ples to the state board of health each week of each month so that it can be properly tested to determine the nuritv of city drinking water According to Citv Utilities Chief Joe Miitsch over the last year his department has had numerous problems in getting those samples to the state agency on time stating that samples are to be delivered to officials in Indianapolis within 48 hours of being taken from water lines here The difficulties have come in the form of late deliveries according to Miitsch He stated that in at least six instances the samples mailed here by first class delivery through regular mail routes have failed their next day delivery which Miitsch states is guaranteed by postal authorities He added that in many cases the city has paid for first class but has gotten third or fourth class mailing results Miitsch added that the city has been sending their samples via mail routes for the past 30 years Mittsch pointed out that some samples have taken as long as nine days to reach their Indianapolis destination Since the EPA and Board of Health refuse samples after 48 hours Miitsch informed the council that his office has had numerous warning letters from state officials over the last six mon 26 This will happen on the same day ths The result has the Board of Health now requiring local officials here to print a public notice stating that water purification tests for ebruary 1986 were not fully completed and that total purification was not guaranteed for that period of time dealing with past tenses here gentlemen" stated Mayor Eugene Linn know that our water is pure and what we are looking at is just a bunch of government red tape "stated Linn got to run this ad and play the game TheyfEPA just have anything better to do" The slap for Gas City finally came about after the ebruary 4 1986 sample failed to reach health officials in Indianapolis until reo necessitating the Drinking Water Unit officials at the state level to levy the public notice requirement water is said Miitsch problem has been the postal failure to deliver one day sevice on first class postage which should be done Miitsch stated that even before the eb 4 water sample turned up late 1705S 512E
